1000 Books Before Kindergarten Poster

It’s never too early to start reading to your child! The 1000 Books Before Kindergarten program is designed to be simple and to encourage reading as a daily habit, starting from your baby’s first days. To register, stop by the library or visit our website to sign your child up and receive your free fridge clip and your level one book log, where you will record the first 250 books that are read to your child. Simply tally each book that is read to your child. When you have filled your level one log, bring it to the library to receive your next log and to post your child’s name on our wall of achievement. Books can be read and counted multiple times. Everything is new to your little ones, so repetition is valuable and necessary for development. Be sure you remember to tally the stories your children hear at daycare or library storytime as well. Once your child has reached the 1000 books benchmark, your little one will have the opportunity to place a bookplate acknowledging their achievement in any book in the children’s section. Why 1000 books? We don’t want this program to be a burden to parents, or to be a competition, but 1000 books is a great goal to strive for. This is an ongoing program with the schedule to be set by caregivers. If you read one book a day to your child starting from day one, you will reach 1000 books by age three. Questions? Contact Youth Services Librarian at 319-656-3501 or via email Welcome to 1000 Books Before Kindergarten at the Kalona Public Library! You are your child’s first and best teacher!
